What is a lift station, and what should I know about it during a power outage?

A lift station is a pump system that helps move wastewater from all homes out of the community into the county’s sewer system. Many lift stations that rely on electricity to function.

  • If your power is out, assume the lift station is also without power.
  • Without power, wastewater cannot be pumped out, which increases the risk of sewage backing up into streets — or in severe cases, into homes.
  • Some counties may bring in generators to restore service, but this can take time.

During outages, please be cautious with water use in your home. Limit flushing, showers, laundry, and dishwashing until power (or backup power) is restored. This helps protect both your property and your neighbors’.
