Can I put up temporary shutters (like plywood) before a hurricane?

No association wants to prohibit a homeowner from taking reasonable steps to protect their property during a hurricane or tropical storm. Temporary shutters, such as plywood panels, are generally permitted without ARC/ACC approval in an emergency.

That said, the type of home you live in matters:

  • Single-family homes: Owners are responsible for their own exteriors and may use temporary shutters as needed. You’ll be expected to remove them promptly after the storm passes.
  • Townhomes or condos (shared buildings): Because the Association is often responsible for the exterior, there may be restrictions on how shutters are installed. For example, the Board may limit the type of fasteners that can be used to avoid damage to the structure.

Always check your association’s rules and guidelines ahead of storm season. When in doubt, ask your Board or management contact — it’s better to clarify before an emergency hits.
